The best countries to teach really depends on the individual teacher and what they’re looking for in terms of experience, salary, work environment and more. While some countries are winding down their hiring of ESL teachers, others are just getting started. We would love to hear what you think and which countries you are currently teaching in. SOUTH KOREA

This country continues to dominate the ESL sector with teachers being hired year round. They offer stability, a good starting wage and opportunities for new teachers and fresh graduates to get started in their ESL careers. However, there are also opportunities for more experienced teachers to show their skills and talents. The current trend seems to be to hire teachers already in the country. Read more here. 

UZBEKISTAN

A rising star in the ESL sector with private and government language programs providing teaching opportunities for skilled teachers with at least two years experience under their belt. The cost of living is among the lowest in the world, which makes this a great country to save and save, while enjoying the beauty and all that its major cities have to offer. Uzbekistan has something for everyone. 

CHINA

The growing need for kindergarten, middle, high school and university teachers, along with competitive salary packages, makes this a great hub for those starting out in ESL and more experienced teachers. China is a great mix of old and modern and its leaps in technology would intrigue even the mos resistant luddites among us. 

THAILAND

This old country is not new to the ESL world. It offers good local salaries and suited to those seeking a more laid back lifestyle. With beaches abounding, vibrant culture, good food and low cost of living, Thailand is still a winner. Runner ups are Vietnam and Cambodia.

MIDDLE EAST

For those English teachers who are serious about making money, the middle east could be for you, with tax-free salaries, company benefits, great lifestyles and hot climates all year round. But, there’s no free lunch…be prepared to work hard. The Middle East are open to qualified, licensed native English teachers with a bit more experience under their belt.
